Clean environments free of pollutants and other airborne particulate are crucial to a number of industries, which is why a cleanroom is used. XX cleanrooms are designed to control the amount of contaminants within the space, which is measured by PPC (particles per cubic meter). Just to give an example, the lowest level of cleanroom classification is ISO 9, which has a PPC of 35,000,000 (0.5mm particles or larger) and is comparable to an average city. Industries from electronic engineering to pharmaceuticals depend on modular cleanrooms to maintain a stable environment in which manufacturing and testing could be compromised by even the smallest particles. Complex industries such as Beer production depend on cleanrooms to reduce particle contamination and provide a clean, stable environment. Ensuring the air within a cleanroom is pollutant free is of prime concern, which is why HEPA filters are utilised. In industries requiring the cleanest of conditions, ULPA filters can be fitted for even smaller particulate filtration.

In order to work within the contaminant free cleanroom, Beer production personnel must take a course in contamination control theory. In order to keep a XX cleanroom ‘clean,’ airlocks are used on all doors in and out of the cleanroom, and special clothing and gowning / de-gowning procedures are in place to ensure contamination is minimal. Depending on the task at hand and the ISO grade of the cleanroom, Beer production personnel may be required to dress in anything from standard lab coats and hair nets to fully enclosed suits with its own breathing apparatus. Each cleanroom will have a different ISO grade, and therefore require any of the following: shoes or boots, face masks, bouffant caps, gowns, frocks, aprons, gloves, hoods, and shoe covers. Beer personnel will need to dress in accordance with the ISO grade of the portable cleanroom, and the specific job being performed therein.
