Controlled levels of pollutants and pathogens (such as chemical vapours, aerosol particles, and microorganisms) cleanrooms are utilised by many industries as ultra-clean, self-contained environments. Measured in particles per cubic meter (PPC) with a focus on particulate size, Aerospace cleanrooms are able to control the level of particle contamination within the given space. Just to give an example, the lowest level of cleanroom classification is ISO 9, which has a PPC of 35,000,000 (0.5mm particles or larger) and is comparable to an average city. A multitude of industries from pharmaceuticals to electronic component engineering whereby testing and manufacturing could be affected by particulate contamination depend on modular cleanrooms to maintain a filtered and stable environments. For Aerospace, portable cleanrooms help maintain industry standards by reducing pollutant contamination, which can have a real impact in such a complex industry. Capable of filtering out contaminates as small as 0.3 microns, HEPA filters are installed to ensure the air entering a cleanroom is free of pollutants. ULPA filters are another option available for modular cleanrooms and filter out particulate even smaller than 0.3 microns offering quantifiable reduction beyond 0.12µm

For industries like Aerospace, personnel must undergo training in contamination control theory if they are to working in the portable cleanroom environment. Cleanroom specific clothing, gowning / de-gowning, and showering help keep particulate contamination within the cleanroom to an absolute minimum, with airlocks used for both entrances and exits to help protect the Aerospace cleanroom’s integrity. ISO grade will determine what Aerospace personnel need to wear in order to minimise contamination when working within the cleanroom, and can include anything from standard lab coats to fully enclosed jumpsuits. Modular cleanrooms have a fairly standard list of clothing and can include shoes, face masks, boots, aprons, gloves, bouffant caps, beard covers, gowns, hoods, frocks, and shoe covers. Aerospace personnel will need to dress in accordance with the ISO grade of the portable cleanroom, and the specific job being performed therein.
